Backend Keywords

Last updated: March 17, 2026

Backend keywords defined: The hidden Amazon search terms

Backend keywords (also called “search terms” or “generic keywords”) are hidden search terms you can store for your product in Seller Central. These keywords are not visible to customers, but they are indexed by Amazon's search algorithm.

After the title, backend keywords are the second most important keyword source for Amazon search. They provide room for relevant search terms that don't fit in the visible listing – such as synonyms, alternative spellings, colloquial terms, or common typos.

Entering backend keywords: Step by step

Here is how you store backend keywords for your product:

  1. 1. Log in to Seller Central
  2. 2. Go to “Inventory” → “Manage Inventory”
  3. 3. Click “Edit” on the product you want
  4. 4. Select the “Keywords” tab
  5. 5. Enter your keywords in the “Generic Keywords” field
  6. 6. Click “Save and finish”

Important note on the character limit:

You have 249 bytes available – not 249 characters! A regular letter uses 1 byte, but accented characters (ä, ö, ü) and special characters can take 2-4 bytes. To be safe, stay under 200 characters.

Best practices: How to make the most of the 249 bytes

These strategies help you get the maximum out of your backend keywords:

No repetition

Keywords that already appear in the title, the bullet points, or the description don't need to be repeated. Amazon indexes the entire listing.

Separate with spaces only

Separate keywords with single spaces. Commas, semicolons, or other characters are unnecessary and waste space.

Use the hyphen trick

A hyphenated word covers all variants. “anti-slip” indexes: “anti-slip”, “anti slip”, and “antislip”.

Synonyms and variants

Use colloquial terms, regional variants (e.g. “soda” vs. “pop”), and different spellings.

Common typos

Well-known typos can be worthwhile, e.g. “headphone” as “headfone” or “bluetoth” instead of “bluetooth”. In the visible listing that would be embarrassing; in the backend it's smart.

What is prohibited? Amazon's guidelines

Amazon has clear guidelines for backend keywords. Violations can lead to your listing being suppressed:

The following are prohibited:

  • Other brand names: “like Apple”, “Samsung alternative”, etc.
  • Your own brand name: Even your own brand does not belong in the backend
  • ASINs and SKUs: No product codes from you or your competitors
  • Subjective claims: “best product”, “cheap”, “bestseller”
  • Temporary terms: “new”, “sale”, “2026”
  • Offensive terms: Anything that violates the community guidelines

Important: Even though Amazon doesn't catch every rule violation right away, later reviews can result in listings being blocked. Stay on the safe side.

Pro tips for maximum indexing

With these advanced strategies you maximize the impact of your backend keywords:

  • Singular instead of plural: Amazon automatically recognizes plural forms. “headphone” also covers “headphones”.
  • No filler words: “for”, “with”, “and”, etc. waste space. Customers don't search for them.
  • Capitalization doesn't matter: Amazon ignores letter case. Skip the capital letters.
  • Foreign-language terms: If your target audience also searches in other languages, add those terms.
  • Use cases: “gift idea”, “camping”, “home office” – contextual terms that customers use.

Example of optimized backend keywords:

bluetooth headphones over-ear wireless gaming music podcast home office travel airplane noise-cancelling anc gift

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How can I check whether my backend keywords are indexed?

Search on Amazon for your ASIN combined with a backend keyword (e.g. “B01XXXXX bluetooth”). If your product appears, the keyword is indexed. Tools like Helium 10 also offer index checkers.

How long does it take for changes to take effect?

Changes to backend keywords are usually indexed within 15-60 minutes. In some cases it can take up to 24 hours. Ranking effects only become apparent after a few days.

Are there other keyword fields besides the generic keywords?

Yes, depending on the category there are additional fields such as “Platinum Keywords” (for vendors only), “Subject Matter”, or “Target Audience”. Each has its own byte limits and intended uses.
