Stranded Inventory

Last updated: March 17, 2026

Stranded inventory defined: Stuck stock

Stranded inventory refers to products that are sitting in an Amazon fulfillment center but cannot be sold. The reason: there is no active listing or offer for them on the marketplace. So what is stranded inventory in practice? It is stock that exists physically but has gone “dark” commercially.

In simple terms: your goods are in Amazon's warehouse, but customers can't find or buy them. That is a problem, because you keep paying storage fees while generating no revenue. On top of that, amazon stranded inventory has a negative impact on your IPI score.

Common causes of stranded inventory

There are numerous reasons why inventory can become “stranded”:

Listing issues

  • The listing was suppressed by Amazon (suppression)
  • The listing was manually deleted or deactivated
  • Missing product information or images
  • Violation of Amazon's policies

Pricing issues

  • Price too high or too low (pricing error)
  • Missing min/max price with automated pricing
  • Buy Box suppression due to price deviation

Compliance issues

  • Missing approval for a category
  • Product was classified as “restricted”
  • IP complaint (trademark, patent)
  • Safety concerns or quality issues

Technical issues

  • ASIN/SKU error or incorrect linking
  • Expired best-before date
  • FNSKU issues

Finding stranded inventory: Step by step

Here is how to find stuck stock in Seller Central:

  1. 1. Sign in to Seller Central
  2. 2. Go to “Inventory” → “Manage Inventory”
  3. 3. If you have stranded inventory, you will see a yellow notice at the top: “Fix stranded inventory”
  4. 4. Click the link to go to the dashboard
  5. 5. Alternatively: “Inventory” → “Inventory Planning” → “Stranded Inventory”

In the dashboard you can see all affected SKUs, the reason for the “stranding”, and recommended actions.

Fixing stranded inventory: Solution strategies

Depending on the cause, there are different ways to resolve it:

1

Recreate or reactivate the listing

If the listing was deleted: recreate it with the same SKU. The inventory is automatically re-linked.

2

Resolve pricing issues

Adjust the price or set min/max prices in “Automated Pricing” to avoid pricing errors.

3

Add missing information

Check the listing for missing required fields (images, description, category) and complete them.

4

Request approval

If a category approval is missing: request it via “Request approval to sell”.

5

Contact Amazon Support

For complex cases: open a case under “Help” → “Get support” → “FBA” → “Stranded Inventory”.

6

Create a removal order

If the product should no longer be sold: have it returned or disposed of to save on storage fees.

Automatic resolution:

Amazon can fix certain stranded inventory cases automatically. Enable this option under “Edit automatic-action settings” in the stranded inventory dashboard. After 30 days without action, Amazon automatically relists affected ASINs.

Avoiding stranded inventory: Prevention

These measures reduce the risk of fba stranded inventory:

  • Regular checks: Review the stranded inventory dashboard weekly
  • Complete listings: Make sure all required fields are filled in
  • Min/max prices: Set price limits to avoid pricing errors
  • Timely replenishment: Before shipping, check that the listing is active
  • Mind expiration dates: Don't send products with a short best-before date
  • Email notifications: Enable alerts for listing issues

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Does stranded inventory incur costs?

Yes, you continue to pay the regular FBA storage fees even though the inventory can't be sold. In addition, stranded inventory has a negative impact on your IPI, which can lead to additional storage utilization surcharges.

How quickly should I fix stranded inventory?

As fast as possible. Every day without an active listing means lost revenue and ongoing costs. On top of that, long-standing stranded inventory can negatively affect your account health.

What happens if I do nothing?

After a certain period (depending on your settings), Amazon may automatically try to recreate the listing. For products with a best-before date or other compliance issues, Amazon may also dispose of the goods. In the worst case, long-term storage fees apply.
