Amazon FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon)

Last updated: January 12, 2025

What is Amazon FBA?

Amazon FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon) is a logistics service in which Amazon handles storage, shipping, and customer service on behalf of sellers. Merchants send their goods to Amazon fulfillment centers, and Amazon takes care of the rest.

This service lets sellers focus on their core business while Amazon handles the operational side. FBA products qualify for Prime shipping, which increases visibility and sales opportunities.

How does Amazon FBA work?

The FBA process has a simple structure: sellers send their products to Amazon fulfillment centers. There, the goods are stored and then packed and shipped by Amazon as orders come in.

Amazon also takes over the entire customer service, including returns and refunds. The whole thing is managed through Seller Central, where sellers can create shipments and monitor their inventory.

Benefits of Amazon FBA

  • Prime eligibility: FBA products qualify for Amazon Prime with fast, free shipping.
  • Buy Box advantage: FBA products have a better chance of winning the Buy Box.
  • Customer trust: “Ships from Amazon” builds trust with buyers.
  • Scalability: Amazon's logistics grow with your business.
  • Time savings: No need to run your own warehousing and shipping logistics.

Understanding FBA fees

FBA fees are made up of fulfillment fees (based on size and weight) and storage fees (charged monthly per cubic meter). On top of that, there can be charges for long-term storage or returns processing.

Careful calculation is essential to ensure profitability. Amazon provides an FBA calculator so you can work out the costs in advance.

FBA vs. FBM: The comparison

With FBA, Amazon handles storage, shipping, and customer service. With FBM (Fulfillment by Merchant), the seller does everything themselves.

FBA is a good fit for merchants who want to scale and take advantage of Prime benefits. FBM is better for specialized products or when you want full control over shipping.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How much does Amazon FBA cost?

Costs vary depending on product size, weight, and how long items are stored. There are fulfillment fees per unit and monthly storage fees. The FBA calculator helps with the calculation.

Is FBA worth it for small sellers?

FBA can pay off for small sellers too, since it offers Prime eligibility and customer trust. That said, a cost-benefit analysis is recommended.

What happens with returns under FBA?

Amazon processes returns for FBA products. Returned items are inspected and can be resold, disposed of, or sent back to you.
