Vendor

Last updated: January 12, 2025

What is a vendor?

A vendor is a company or an individual that sells goods or services to a business partner. The term means “provider” or “supplier” and is used across commerce to describe the party on the selling side of a transaction.

Vendors are an essential building block in commerce and production. They deliver raw materials, components, finished products, or digital services within contractually governed business relationships.

Role in the business ecosystem

Vendors are far more than just suppliers – they are strategic partners whose performance has a decisive influence on business success. The quality and reliability of a vendor have a direct impact on the end product.

Modern companies work closely with their most important vendors to drive innovation, optimize costs, and minimize risk.

Vendors in practice on Amazon

On Amazon, selected manufacturers or wholesalers act as vendors, selling their products directly to Amazon. Amazon takes the goods into its own warehouse and appears as the seller (first-party seller). This is why “Amazon vendor” is the standard term for these direct suppliers.

Access is invitation-only and runs through Vendor Central. In exchange for giving up price control, vendors benefit from customer trust and improved visibility.

Types of vendors

  • Producers/Manufacturers: Make goods themselves and sell to retailers.
  • Wholesalers: Buy in large quantities and resell to retailers.
  • Service providers: Offer intangible services such as IT support or consulting.
  • Software vendors: Develop and distribute software solutions.
