Review Velocity

What is review velocity? Definition and meaning

Review velocity describes the rate at which a product on Amazon receives new customer reviews. It is typically measured as the number of new reviews per time period – for example, per week or per 30 days. A high review velocity signals to both Amazon and potential buyers that a product is being actively purchased and that customers are motivated to share their experiences.

Review velocity is an important indicator of product performance and indirectly influences organic ranking. Amazon uses machine learning to calculate the weighting of individual reviews – factors such as recency, verified purchase status, and the review history all play a role. A steady review velocity shows Amazon that your product is relevant and in demand.

How review velocity influences Amazon ranking

The Amazon A9 algorithm (and its successor A10) treats reviews as one of many ranking factors. This is not just about the total number of reviews or the average star rating, but also about the recency and consistency of new reviews. Products with a higher number of positive, recent reviews tend to enjoy better visibility in the search results.

How review velocity affects your ranking

  • 1.
Conversion rate: More recent reviews increase customer trust and therefore the conversion rate
  • 2.
Relevance signal: A continuous stream of new reviews shows Amazon that the product is being actively purchased
  • 3.
Recency bonus: Amazon weights newer reviews more heavily than older ones
  • 4.
Social proof: A high review count reduces purchase barriers for new customers

Amazon first checks whether a product is 100% relevant to a search query. After that, factors such as sales frequency, click-through rate, conversion rate, and of course customer reviews are taken into account. If you have more positive reviews than your competitors, Amazon will tend to rank your product higher.

Review velocity limits & Amazon suspensions

Amazon monitors review velocity closely in order to detect manipulation. If the number of reviews is unusually high relative to sales, or suddenly spikes, it can trigger a review or even a suspension. This is referred to as a “sales velocity suspension” or a “review velocity review”.

Warning signs for Amazon

  • • Unusually many reviews relative to sales
  • • A sudden spike in the number of reviews
  • • A high share of non-verified purchases
  • • Similar wording across multiple reviews
  • • Reviews from accounts with a suspicious pattern

New sellers in particular are vulnerable to sales velocity suspensions. If a new product suddenly generates a lot of sales but has only a few or a disproportionate number of reviews, Amazon may temporarily suspend the account to verify its legitimacy.

Natural review velocity benchmarks

Fashion / apparel0.5-1.5% of buyers leave a review

Strategies for more Amazon reviews

There are legitimate ways to increase your review velocity without violating Amazon's policies. The key is to actively encourage satisfied customers to leave a review – while staying fully compliant with the rules.

1. Amazon Vine Program

The official Amazon program for product testing. You provide products free of charge, and selected “Vine Voices” write honest reviews. Ideal for product launches, since you receive your first reviews quickly. Cost: around $200 per ASIN plus product costs.

2. Request a Review button

Amazon's built-in feature in Seller Central. You can ask every buyer for a review once, in an automated way. This goes out through Amazon's official email and is 100% policy-compliant. It works most effectively 5-15 days after delivery.

3. Product inserts

A small insert in the package can remind customers to leave a review. Important: do not offer any incentives for positive reviews (this is prohibited!). Instead, keep the wording neutral: “Your opinion helps other customers.”

4. Excellent customer service

Satisfied customers review more often and more positively. Fast delivery, good product quality, and proactive problem-solving significantly increase the likelihood of organic reviews.

Prohibited practices

  • • Buying reviews or obtaining them in exchange for compensation
  • • Offering discounts in exchange for reviews
  • • Asking friends/family for reviews
  • • Manipulating competitors' negative reviews
  • • Creating fake accounts to leave reviews

Sales velocity vs. review velocity: The difference

While review velocity measures the rate of new reviews, sales velocity refers to the speed of sales – that is, the number and value of transactions in a given period. Both metrics are closely related and influence ranking, but in different ways.

Comparing the velocity metrics

AspectSales velocityReview velocity
DefinitionSales per time periodReviews per time period
Direct ranking impactHigh (primary factor)Medium (secondary factor)
How to influence itPPC, pricing, promotionsVine, Request a Review
Typical ratio100 sales= 1-5 reviews

Amazon considers both metrics in context. A high sales velocity without a corresponding review velocity is normal and not a concern. It only becomes problematic when the review velocity is disproportionately high compared to sales – that points to manipulation.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

What is a good review velocity?

A “good” review velocity depends on your category and sales figures. As a general rule: 1-5% of your buyers leave a review. With Amazon Vine or Request a Review, that rate can rise to 5-10%. More important than absolute numbers is consistency – a steady stream of new reviews is better than sporadic spikes.

How does Amazon calculate the star rating?

Amazon uses machine learning to calculate the average star rating. Not all reviews are weighted equally: newer reviews, verified purchases, and reviews marked as “helpful” carry more influence. Amazon keeps the exact formula secret.

Can I be suspended for a review velocity that is too high?

Yes, if Amazon detects unnatural patterns. If your review velocity is too high relative to sales or suddenly spikes, it can trigger a review. If manipulation is suspected, you risk a temporary or permanent suspension. Stick to legitimate methods such as Vine and Request a Review.

How can I track my review velocity?

Specialized Amazon seller tools offer review tracking. They show you how your reviews develop over time and also let you monitor competitors. In Seller Central, you can see your review trend under “Customer Reviews”.

Does review velocity affect the Buy Box?

Indirectly, yes. The Buy Box is determined primarily by price, shipping method, and seller performance. But products with many positive reviews tend to have better conversion rates, which in turn has a positive effect on seller performance.
