What are SERPs?

SERP stands for “Search Engine Results Page” – the search engine results page that a search engine displays after a query. It presents the information most relevant to that query in an ordered list.

The results shown are selected and ranked by relevance through complex algorithms in fractions of a second. SERPs are the central interface between people searching for information and web content.

Result formats and SERP features

Modern SERPs are far more than a list of links. They contain a variety of SERP features:

  • Organic results: Classic search results based on relevance.
  • Paid ads: Google Ads at the top and bottom of the page.
  • Featured snippets: Direct answers to questions.
  • Local packs: Maps for local searches.
  • Rich snippets: Review stars, prices, event dates.

Why SERPs matter for visibility

A high placement in the SERPs is decisive for online success. The majority of users click only on the first results – top positions lead to considerably more traffic.

Organic results are “earned” through SEO, while paid ads are “bought.” Organic results often enjoy a higher level of trust among users.
